We can’t believe fall is around the corner, and it’s definitely time to update or create a cozy reading corner. A new season is upon us, and we’re thinking about cooler evenings that will be begging for a cozy blanket, a warm drink, and a book that makes you forget how early the sun is setting.

Relax, creating that cozy fall reading corner doesn’t have to break the budget or take a whole weekend! You just need to pick out a comfortable spot, and with a few clever additions and some bookish personality, even the smallest unused corner in your home can become your new favorite place to read. Beware, you may have some competition from the family!

It’s time to create a cozy fall reading corner that is bookishly inviting and leaves enough money in the budget for another book. Priorities, right? On a separate note, here’s me wondering if that corner at the back of the office needs a bit of updating…lunchtime reading is part of the job!

 

Start with a Corner You Already Have

Before buying anything new, look around your home for a quiet spot that is currently being overlooked. It could be an armchair beside a window, an empty bedroom corner, one side of the couch, or even a comfortable space at the end of your bed.

You definitely don’t need to purchase a special reading chair if you already have somewhere comfortable to sit. Move an existing chair closer to a window, turn it slightly away from the busiest part of the room, and suddenly it feels like a separate little reading retreat.

If your “new” reading chair needs more support, borrow a cushion from another room. A pillow with a fall-colored cover can completely change the look without requiring a new piece of furniture.

The goal is not to create the perfect social media reading nook. It is to create a place where you genuinely want to sit down and stay for several chapters.

 

Give Your Reading Corner a Fall Color Palette

Fall decorating does not have to mean covering every available surface with pumpkins. A few warm shades and cozy textures can create the same seasonal feeling. Look for colors like rust, mustard yellow, deep green, cream, burgundy, and warm brown. You probably already have pillows, baskets, candles, or small decorations in these shades hiding around your home.

And let’s not forget that sometimes the best things are free! Arrange fallen leaves or small branches in a vase, fill a bowl with pinecones, or frame a printed autumn quote using a frame you already own.

Stacking a few books with warm-toned covers beside your chair is another great way to decorate. We are firm believers that books count as home décor, especially when we need to justify owning quite so many. Yes, we’re color-coding our books in fall colors! 

 

Add the Most Important Cozy Layer

When it comes to a fall reading corner, a blanket is a must! Blankets add texture, warmth, a splash of color, and they always lead to that feeling that plans should be cancelled and another chapter begun.

Keep Your Current Read Close and Protected

Keeping your current book, journals, pens, glasses, and all the other essentials in one place is key. It never ceases to amaze me how they seem to disappear as soon as I get comfortable. You definitely don’t need to rush out and purchase a new side table! We are all about repurposing! A sturdy wooden crate, small stool, storage box, or stack of large books can work just as well.

Turn Reading Time into a Cozy Ritual

Your fall reading corner is more than somewhere to sit and read. We plan on making it part of a little ritual that helps us slow down and enjoy our book without constantly checking our phones or thinking about everything else you should be doing. In other words, the only technology allowed is that reading light!

All that’s left to do is make yourself a warm drink, choose a snack (chocolate always works), turn on your lamp, and relax. Play quiet background music, light your favorite candle, spray some literary perfume, and disappear between the pages!
