About the Book

Jen and Riley's friendship, rooted in the days of their kindergarten adventures, has blossomed into an unbreakable sisterly bond despite their diverging life paths. Jen found love early and has now, after numerous attempts, joyfully discovered she's expecting. Riley, on the other hand, chased her youthful aspirations all the way to the cusp of making history as one of the first Black female anchors for Philadelphia's premier news channel.

Their unwavering connection faces its toughest challenge yet when an incident involving Jen's husband, a dedicated city police officer, shakes their world. He is implicated in the shooting of an unarmed Black youth, plunging a six-month-pregnant Jen into a whirlpool of dread over her family's future, her husband's liberty, and the stability of her friendship with Riley. Tasked with reporting this pivotal event, Riley grapples with its ramifications on her community, her career trajectory, and the fabric of her lifelong friendship with Jen.

"We Are Not Like Them" emerges as a poignant exploration of friendship's resilience and a catalyst for profound dialogue, celebrating the strength that comes from enduring bonds.

It will make you cry

I can't even start on how much this book affected me. Usually when I read books or watch movies regarding this topic about the loss of people on the split second decisions a police officer has to make, I find it so wrong that the use of lethal methods haven't been resolved.
Yes, I understand that every situation varies, but in this book, I just felt this sick feeling in my stomach because not only did my heart break for the victim and their family, I also felt so sorry for the officer who's life and his family's life changed forever. What I found very compelling was how each woman, in this life long friendship, were delt with such a tragic event and were on opposite sides of this Civil unrest.
When I finished reading the book, I felt so bad for both sides.
This should be made into a movie.

Hard to pick a side

This book just had me thinking a lot about the aftermath of a conflict gone wrong. By the end, it left me at a place where I couldn't decide what my feelings were. My heart broke for both women and everything that happened after something terrible occres.
